Dean and Sam Winchester are always around demons. Sometimes, they form alliances with them but the majority of the time they are battling them. Demons are not the trustworthy type. If they have no use for you, you are pretty much dead. However, if they are working with you you can never completely trust them because they will cross you or abandon you every time.
There are also different types of demons. For example there are:
Black eyed demons are the most common. These are the regular demons which come in giant swarms. Many times Dean and Sam come across these. Some times just a couple like a usual thing, or sometimes when a battle is about to come they swarm places or towns.
One time, when the brothers were put in jail by Special Agent Victor Henricksen, thousands of demons came and surrounded the jailhouse, looking for Dean and Sam. Each and everyone of them entered the jail and they all died except for one who ended up getting to Lilith.
Lilith is the only white eyed demon in Supernatural. She is the original demon, and mother of all demons. She was created by Lucifer when he disliked his father's, God's, creation of humans. She enjoys taking over the bodies of little girls reminding her that she was the original daughter of Satan. She is one of the most powerful demons on the show. her one goal is to get her father, Lucifer, out of his cage.
Red eyed demons appear in the second season of Supernatural. They are the Crossroads demons. These demons appear to those humans wanting to make a deal to make their lives better. usually it is men who are the greedy ones who enter the exact center of the crossroads to make their deal. Therefore, it is usually a stunningly beautiful women the demon possesses to make the deal.
The demon tries to make a deal with these men offering them anything they desire, for a small price. All they have to do is kiss the demon to get whatever they desire, then in exactly ten years, the contract is up and the demon goes to collect the soul of the human who made the deal. Usually these demons play with a lot of trickery and guilt the men into making the deal so that they can make there contracts.
Once their time is up, the men are constantly seeing black dogs, or better called hell hounds. These dogs are invisible to all humans except for those who are close to the hell fire. Hell hounds are the things that pull the humans down to hell to be tortured for the rest of eternity, unless they decide to become demons themselves. Sam says, "Hell hounds are like Demonic Pit bulls."
The King of the Crossroads is Crowley. He is the one who holds all of the contracts. Then at one point he becomes not only the king of the Crossroads, but the king of hell entirely.
The last type of demon is the yellow eyed demon, also known as Azazel. Just like Lilith, Azazel is the only demon with a particular eye color. He was the demon who bled into the mouths of babies and creating a master race of human demon hybrids. he used the best of these hybrids to open the door to hell.
There is a certain way to trap a demon, which the Winchester boys are introduced to when they meet Bobby Singer. This is called the Devil's Trap. Once a demon passes over the threshold of the trap they cannot get out. This is the perfect time to send the evil things back to hell using an exorcism. Many times Sam uses them to get a demon out of a body, until the boys find faster ways of doing it. Sam soon figures out that he can expel the demons out of a person's body with his mind, with the help of Ruby. Ruby, is also the demon that gives the boys a knife, that can kill any demon. Dean also carries around the Colt which kills demons along with other creatures, however, exorcism is the one way to get rid of the demon and save the human inside.
Other ways to make sure demons are not to get to you is to use a circle of salt, iron, or a special tattoo that forces demons to stay away and not enter your body.
